Lagos State to stop life pension, other entitlements for former governors
The governor of Lagos State, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu has resoved to abolish the Public Office Holders’ Payment of Pension Law 2007 which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former governors and their deputies.
The governor disclosed this while presenting the 2021 budget estimate of N1,155,022,413,005.82 to the Lagos State House of Assembly in Ikeja.
Abolishing the legislation means the stoppage of pension payment to Lateef Jakande, Bola Tinubu, Babatunde Fashola, Akinwunmi Ambode and other individuals who served as governors and deputy governors in the state.
“Mr. Speaker and Honourable Members of the House, in light of keeping the costs of governance low and to signal selflessness in public service, we will be sending a draft executive bill to the House imminently for the repeal of the Public Office Holder (Payment of Pension Law 2007), which provides for payment of pension and other entitlements to former Governors and their Deputies,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The governor said the abolition of pension for the former state chief executives and their deputies will reduce the cost of governance in the state.
“It is our firm belief that with dwindling revenues and the appurtenant inflationary growth rates, that we need to come up with innovative ways of keeping the costs of governance at a minimum while engendering a spirit of selflessness in public service,” he added.
He said the bill will be sent back to the Lagos State House of Assembly to formally repeal the law.
It would be recalled that the Lagos House of Assembly had passed a pension bill for erstwhile governors and their deputies.
According to the law, the governor is entitled to N30 million pension annually, a house in Lagos and Abuja, six brand new cars every three years, medical allowances in any part of the world and other allowances.
