The Nigerian Senate has ruled out the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari as the search for a solution to the lingering security challenges continue across the country.

Senate dedicated the most part of the day’s plenary to debate issues of insecurity, following a motion by Senator Sani Musa on the urgent need to arrest the activities of terrorists in some communities of Niger state, north-central Nigeria.

Senator Musa thereafter submitted that initiating impeachment proceedings against the President will only amount to creating another form of crisis that is capable of heating up the already tensed polity.

His motion is captured as the “Urgent need for the federal government to deploy troops & other security apparatus to immediately bring to an end the menace of insurgency & terrorism in Niger state & other parts of Nigeria.“

In his lead debate on the motion, Senator Musa restated the Niger state Governor’s narrative that the Boko Haram sect had hoisted its flag in the numerous villages now under their control in the north-central state.

Most of the Senators who participated in the debate expressed worry that in spite of the numerous measures taken by the National Assembly, in supporting government efforts, the issue of insecurity has continued to linger.

The Senate thereafter adopted all the prayers contained in the motion as presented by Senator Musa, including a minute silence for all the victims of the attack.

Other resolutions include a call on the Chief of Defence Staff, the Chief of Army Staff and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to immediately deploy troops to defend the unarmed populace & return security to the affected communities which is the only antidote to restoring confidence in the security, & safety of the communities affected.

Senate also urged the Chief of Army staff & the IGP to as a matter of urgency, direct for the establishment of a permanent military & police command base at the axis adjoining Shiroro & Rafi LGAs, & to redesign the modus operandi of the military operations within the affected areas so as to curb the escalating insecurity.

It also resolved to direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs & the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), to as a matter of national emergency, provide relief materials & a medical support team to help the victims immediately.
