Nigeria’s pension industry recorded a strong recovery between May and August 2026, with total pension fund assets rising by about N480 billion to N31.8 trillion, according to the latest monthly industry performance reports released by the National Pension Commission (PenCom).
The increase represents about 1.5 per cent growth over the four-month period, reversing the decline recorded in June and reinforcing the growing importance of pension funds as a source of long-term capital for the Nigerian economy.
PenCom’s data showed that pension assets stood at N31.32 trillion in May 2026, compared with N30.63 trillion in April, representing a monthly increase of about N690 billion.
However, the industry recorded a setback in June, as total pension assets fell to N30.69 trillion, declining by approximately N630 billion from the previous month.
The decline was short-lived as pension assets rebounded strongly in July, rising by about N820 billion to N31.51 trillion.
The positive trend continued in August, with total pension assets increasing by nearly N290 billion to approximately N31.8 trillion.
The recovery places pension assets above the N31 trillion mark and highlights the resilience of Nigeria’s pension industry amid fluctuations in the financial markets.
The sustained growth also underscores the increasing role of pension funds in providing long-term financing for economic activities while strengthening retirement savings for contributors.
PenCom has continued to promote reforms and initiatives aimed at improving the efficiency, coverage and sustainability of the Contributory Pension Scheme, while encouraging greater participation by workers and employers.
