BY NGOZI ONYEAKUSI

Former Governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, has died following a period of illness.
Uduaghan reportedly passed away in a hospital in Abuja on Monday morning, October 19, 2026, according to a family member who confirmed the development to Channels Television.
His death marks the end of a political career that saw him occupy key positions in Delta State before leading the oil-producing state for eight years.
The family described his passing as a painful loss, mourning a man whose life and public service touched relatives, friends, associates and people across the state.
Uduaghan, a medical doctor, began his journey in public service in Delta State, where he was appointed Commissioner for Health in 1999. He held the position until 2003, when he became Secretary to the State Government under the administration of former Governor James Ibori.
He remained in that role until 2007, when he succeeded Ibori as governor.
Uduaghan was sworn in on May 29, 2007, and secured a second term, remaining in office until May 29, 2015.
His administration focused on infrastructure, healthcare and efforts to broaden Delta State’s economic base beyond crude oil. One of the policy directions associated with his government was the “Delta Beyond Oil” initiative, which sought to promote other sectors of the state’s economy.
His professional training as a medical doctor also formed part of his background before he moved into senior political and administrative responsibilities.
Following the completion of his second term in 2015, Uduaghan remained a notable figure in Delta State politics.
The circumstances surrounding his death have not been fully disclosed, while details of his burial are yet to be announced by the family.
His passing is expected to draw tributes from political leaders, associates and others who worked with him during his years in government.
